Students From ATU Represent Ghana In Kigali

Four students from the Electrical Engineering Department of Accra Technical University emerged victorious in the recently organized National Skills Competition and are set to represent Ghana in the World Skills Africa Competition in Kigali, Rwanda.

The 4, Nyarko Justice, a Level 200 student, Adamu Lawal, Adjoka Isaac and Clement Tei Siaw all of level 300 class, participated in skills competition in Electricals and Mechatronics have been selected to stake a claim for the Ghana in Kigali from November 20th – 24th, 2018.

Both Nyarko Justice and Clement Tei Siaw chalked 1st and 2nd positions respectively in Mechatronics, while Isaac Adjoka and Adamu Lawal were adjudged 1st and 2nd in Electrical Installation in that order.

In a move to bring the exploits of TVET into policy and public discourse, the Ministry of Education together with the Council for Technical and Vocation Training (COTVET), Ghana Skills Development Initiative (GSDI) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), organized the maiden edition of the National Skills Competition in Accra as a precursor to the African Competition in Kigali.

The four students representing the southern zone faced stiff competition opposition from their compatriots from other Technical Universities and Institutes from the Northern zone and excelled with distinction. The four will undergo a short skills training in Italy in anticipation for the grand finale contest in Rwanda.

78 TVET institutions participated in the 4 day National Skills contest out of which Accra Technical University swept 5 awards in the category of Software Solutions for business, Wood Construction and Furniture Design, Baking and Cooking and Electrical Installation.

Dignitaries present was the Min. of Education - Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, H.E Christoph Rezlaff, German Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Diana Acconcia, European Union Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Markus N.P. Dutly, Swiss Ambassador to Ghana and Dr. Kyei Asamoah, Executive Director of COTVET.

Stake holders have pledged to hold the contest on a yearly basis as a measure of intensifying the spread of TVET related courses for Ghana’s industrialization drive.
