Perseus Mining Limited Donates Petrology Microscopes to UMaT

Perseus Mining Limited has donated five Petrology Microscopes to the Department of Geological Engineering of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa. At a short ceremony to present the equipment to the University, the Director for Sustainability, Mr Edwin Acquaye indicated that, at Perseus Mining Limited, there are various employees who were trained by UMaT and are contributing positively to the development of the Company and so there was the need for the Company to support the University to continue to train competent graduates for the mining industry. He again said that when the request was therefore received from the Department of Geological Engineering to help equip the laboratory they found it prudent to extend a hand of support with the donation of 5 Petrology Microscopes worth one hundred and fifty thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢150,000.00).

The General Manager of Perseus Mining Limited, Mr Stephen Kofi Ndede, emphasised that UMaT was the major supplier of the Technical Manpower in all the Mining Companies in the country and even beyond. Mr Ndede said that the Company responded to the request from the University because of the enormous influence the University had in the mining sector. According to him, the Company deemed it a duty, therefore, to resource the University to enable it to provide effective training for students in the Department of Geological Engineering.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma, responding, thanked the Company led by its General Manger who himself is an Alumnus, and indicated that the equipment would go a long way to benefit not only students in the Department of Geological Engineering but also students from the Department of Minerals Engineering. He emphasised that the donation of the equipment will give a further boost to the desire of the University to properly train the students with practical skills for the mining and allied industries. He called on other Companies to come on board to assist the University to equip its laboratories and workshops which will motivate the students to learn better.

Present at the ceremony from the Company were Mr Phanuel Sackey, the Environmental Manager, Mr Joshua Kofie, the Mining Manager and Mr Zacharia Torgbor, the Metallurgical Superintendent.  Also present from UMaT were Mr A. K. Doku, the Registrar of UMaT, Assoc Prof Sulemana Al-Hassan, Dean of Quality Assurance and Planning Unit, Assoc Prof Grace Ofori-Sarpong, Dean of the Faculty of Minerals Resources Technology, Assoc Prof Michael Affam, Head of the Department of Geological Engineering and Mr Paul Yeboah, the University Relations Officer.
